I play with an x-one controller and regularly get top 20-10 with it and it's because I have always played racing games with a controller it's just what I'm used to. Sounds like you got the thrustmaster I had and I returned it because it felt terrible to me. The wheel controller thing is kinda like a PC/console thing neither is really 'better'. For some reason the ds4 controller feels more responsive.
